Meals on WheelsMISSION STATEMENT:  TO PROVIDE HOT, NUTRITIOUS NOON MEALS TO THE HOMEBOUND SENIOR CITIZENS IN JEFFERSON COUNTY.  THE DELIVERY VOLUNTEER ALSO DOES A SAFETY CHECK AND, WHEN INDICATED, REFERS THE CLIENT TO OTHER SERVICES THAT WILL IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE.

MORE THAN A MEAL…….

The Meals on Wheels program was implemented in December 1976.  Beginning with a delivery of 5 meals, it quickly grew to 25 meals in just a few weeks.  Today, 65 routes throughout Jefferson County, staffed by over 1000 volunteers, provide meals to our homebound elderly.  This past fiscal year, we provided 181,300 meals to our clients.  The need for meals continues to grow as life expectancy increases and hospitals discharge patients earlier with an emphasis on in-home care.  Over 100 homebound elderly are waiting for this service, with calls for assistance coming daily.

Meals On Wheels VolunteersA typical recipient is a single or widowed woman in her 80’s, who lives alone and has in income bordering on poverty level.  She may have an illness that limits her ability to prepare nourishing meals.  Receiving a hot meal allows clients to remain independent in their own homes, eliminating or postponing the need for long-term nursing care.

Our volunteers provide a vital check on the client’s safety and well being, many times being the only person the client sees during the day.  They also provide a warm smile, a listening ear and the comfort of knowing someone cares.  Volunteers are always needed, but especially in the following areas:  Bessemer, Tarrant, Center Point, Clay, Morris, Mount Olive, Warrior, Titusville and Forest Park.  If you are interested in becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer, please call 592-0413.
