Jefferson County Probate Court is responsible for the following duties at both the Birmingham and Bessemer Courthouses.
1. Issuing Marriage Licenses;
2. Recording Land Records (deed, mortgages, leases, etc.);
3. Recording Public Records;
4. Probating Wills and Administering Estates;
5. Issuing Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, and Letters of Guardianship/Conservatorship;
6. Hearing Adoptions, Name Changes, Legitimizations;
7. Hearing Adult Mental Health Involuntary Commitment Cases;
8. Processing Applications for Notary Publics
