MERCHANT CHECKLIST

The check must have been accepted, in person or by mail, by the victim, or a representative of the victim (salesperson, UPS driver, etc.) in the BIRMINGHAM DIVISION of Jefferson County, Alabama.

All checks must be dated less than ONE year prior to obtaining a warrant.

The check writer must be at least 18 years of age on or before the check date.  Any checks written by a minor (under the age of 18) can be handled through the Jefferson County Family Court.

The Worthless Check Unit will NOT accept

·        Post-dated checks

·        Two-party checks

·        Hold checks (any check that you agreed to hold for any specific time before deposit)

·        Checks stamped Stop Payment

·        Checks in which a partial payment has been made

·        Checks which have been sent to a collection agency

Send the Notice to Maker form by CERTIFIED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED.  (SEE additional instructions for “How to Obtain a Warrant”).

Fill out the Worthless Check Information Sheet and submit it to the Special Services Division ONLINE or in PERSON.  (SEE additional instructions for “How to Obtain a Warrant” and for forms to be brought to the Special Services Offices).
