General Information

  • Housing Emergency Grant Program (CDBG)

This program provides grants for emergency repairs to the homes of low and very low-income households

  • Volunteer Based Housing Rehabilitation Programs (CDBG)

Jefferson County works with volunteer-based organizations to make repairs such as painting to the homes of lower income citizens.

  • Housing Accessibility Program (CDBG)

This program provides grants for the installation of necessary accessibility work for qualified low and moderate-income families. This work includes such items as ramps, enlarged doorways, bathroom grab bars and other similar items.

  • Lead Hazard Reduction Grant Program (CDBG)

Grants made to qualified home-owners to eliminate
environmental hazards in the home.

  • Fair Housing & Homeownership Counseling (CDBG)

Free confidential counseling paid for by Jefferson County. Call 849-0123 and ask for the housing counselor.

HOME Program

Home Ownership Opportunities

If you are interested in purchasing a new or existing home, Jefferson County offers assistance through several non-profit agencies in the form of a reduced rate mortgage loan. The benefits to the Program are a lower down-payment and a lower monthly payment. Applicants must meet certain income and credit requirements. Qualifications vary by non-profit so please contact them directly for more information. Jefferson County is an Equal Housing Lender.

Special Needs Rental Housing for the Elderly

Jefferson County funds the development of Special Needs Rental Housing for the Elderly. Tenants must be elderly and meet certain income restrictions. One and two bedroom units, some fully accessible, will be available.

City of Brighton
Eleven additional units are planned in the City of Brighton. These units are schedule to open in the spring of 2008. Call Community Housing Development Corp. of Alabama at 244-1335 (Mike Burkett) for more information.

Free Counseling

Free counseling is available from a HUD Certified Housing Counselor at the Jefferson County Housing Authority. Please call 841-1519 or 849-0123 for counseling in the following areas:

2. Credit Problems
3. Homebuyer Education
